Prescribing Information:
Sage is traditionally known as an abortifacient herb and should not be prescribed to patients who may be pregnant, are pregnant or are breastfeeding (it is thought to reduce the mother's milk supply).
Black cohosh might have hormonal effects and menstrual and uterine stimulant effects. Theoretically, this might increase the risk of miscarriage; avoid using during pregnancy. Theoretically, maternal intake of black cohosh might adversely affect a nursing child; avoid during lactation.
Insufficient reliable information available about using zizyphus, pine bark and maca during pregnancy and lactation; avoid using.
The high tannin content in sage may reduce the absorption of minerals and other nutrients and may be best taken away from food and supplements.
In vitro evidence suggests that sage can inhibit acetylcholinesterase and might increase acetylcholine levels.
Theoretically, concurrent use of sage with anticholinergic drugs or acetylcholinesterase inhibitors might decrease the effectiveness of sage or the anticholinergic agent or have additive effects and increase the risk of cholinergic side effects respectively.
Preliminary research suggests sage and zizyphus might have hypoglycemic activity. Theoretically, sage might have additive therapeutic effects and adverse effects with hypoglycemic drugs.
Some constituents of sage have CNS depressant activity. Theoretically, concomitant use with drugs with sedative properties might cause additive effects and side effects.
Avoid co-administration of black cohosh during chemotherapy treatment.
