This formula (Chai hu Shu Gan San) was first recorded in the (Zhang) Jing-yue's Complete Works (jing yue quan shu) by Zhang Jie-bin (a.k.a. Jing-yue), 1624. It is commonly used for the treatment of Liver Qi constraint with Qi stagnation and Blood stasis, which manifests clinically with a variety of disorders characterized by stress or emotional strain together with pain. The formula has been enhanced with the addition of Corydalis rhizome (yan hu suo) and Curcuma tuber (yu jin), to improve its analgesic action.

It has a broad range of applications for painful disorders due to stagnation of the Liver Qi leading to Blood stasis. This includes gynecological and psychological problems as well as those involving the liver, gallbladder or stomach, and also various types of neuralgia.

TCM ACTIONS
Soothes the Liver, activates the Blood and dispels stasis, alleviates pain.

INDICATIONS
Dysmenorrhoea, premenstrual tension, stress-related mood disorders, depressed mood, bruxism, intercostal neuralgia, cholecystitis, mastitis, chronic gastritis, gastric ulcer (peptic ulcer disease), duodenal ulcer, chronic hepatitis.

SIGNS & SYMPTOMS

  • Tongue is normal or slightly purple, with a thin white coat
