Description
Lipoec 400 contains 400mg of alpha-lipoic acid and is soluble in both fat and water. As such, alpha-lipoic acid provides extensive antioxidant activity throughout the body; this is further supported by its ability to regenerate other antioxidants including glutathione, coenzyme Q10 and vitamins C and E. Lipoec 400 also provides nutritional support for glucose metabolism.

Prescribing Information:
- The active ingredient in the product has not been shown to be contraindicated during pregnancy or lactation.
- It is generally recommended that lipoic acid be taken on an empty stomach to improve bioavailability. However, in insulin-dependent diabetics, who usually have delayed gastric emptying, food has no substantial influence on lipoic acid availability.
- Reported side effects include allergic skin conditions and possible hypoglycaemia in diabetic patients, as a consequence of improved glucose utilisation.
- Theoretically, concurrent use of alpha-lipoic acid with antidiabetic drugs may cause additive hypoglycaemic effects, and necessitates dosing adjustments. However, two randomised, controlled studies show no detectable drug interactions or safety issues with the concomitant intake of alpha-lipoic acid taken at doses of 600mg daily with glibenclamide, acarbose, metformin, sulfonylureas, troglitazone or insulin.
