Description

Selenium Drops is an orange-flavoured oral liquid supplement providing 68mcg of selenium in every daily dose (3 drops). Selenium is involved in the body's antioxidant network and may provide nutritional support for a normal healthy heart, thyroid, immune system and sperm.

Features:

  • Selenium is an important component of many of the body's enzyme systems and hence may play an important nutritional role in supporting normal antioxidant pathways, cardiac health, immune function, muscle metabolism and male fertility.
  • Supports healthy thyroid function by facilitating the conversion of thyroid hormone thyroxine (T4) to its more active form triiodothyronine (T3).
  • Reduces absorption of, and protects against, arsenic, cadmium and mercury by forming inert complexes with these heavy metals.
  • Ageing may be associated with a decline in selenium levels and antioxidant enzymes that contain selenium.
  • Suitable for those who may require additional selenium, including the elderly, pregnant or lactating women and individuals with impaired absorption or poor digestion.
  • Pleasant orange flavour for easy patient compliance.

Prescribed Information:

  • Selenium has not been shown to be contraindicated during pregnancy or lactation when used short-term in amounts that do not exceed 150mcg daily.
  • Hypothyroid patients who are deficient in both iodine and selenium should not receive selenium supplements without concomitant iodine. The reason for this is that while selenium will increase conversion of T4 to T3, the thyroid gland will lack sufficient iodine to synthesise more T4.
  • Selenium has antiplatelet effects and may cause excessive bleeding if used perioperatively or alongside anticoagulant/antiplatelet drugs. Discontinue selenium supplementation at least two weeks before surgical procedures.
  • When consumed in excessive amounts (above 400mcg daily) selenium can cause symptoms of acute toxicity including nausea, vomiting, muscle tenderness, tremor, lightheadedness, garlic breath, abdominal pain, nail changes, fatigue, irritability, alopecia and weight loss.
  • High-dose selenium supplementation (200mcg/day for an average 7.7 years) may increase the risk of developing type 2 diabetes.
  • Selenium supplementation for six years seems to have no effect on skin cancer risk, however longer-term supplementation up to 13 years might slightly increase the risk of squamous cell carcinoma and non-melanoma skin cancer.
