Prescribing Information:
- Scientific literature supports the use of fish oil in pregnancy and lactation.
- Evidence shows that with doses up to 7g per day of EPA and DHA combined there was no increased risk for bleeding, even when taken with other agents that might also increase bleeding, such as aspirin and warfarin. However, patients with bleeding disorders should be monitored.
- Clinical studies show fish oil supplementation have no adverse effect on glucose control and insulin activity in type 2 diabetes.
- Fish oils may have additive effects in patients treated with antihypertensives such as beta-blockers and ACE inhibitors.
- Symptoms of hypomania can develop in patients taking fish oil who have bipolar disorder.
- Higher doses of fish oil might cause suppression of immune and inflammatory response. Immunocompromised patients (e.g. patients with HIV/AIDS) should avoid exceeding 3g/day.
- Theoretically, some people who are allergic to seafood such as fish may also be allergic to fish oil supplements. There is no reliable information showing how likely people with seafood allergy are to have an allergic reaction to fish oil; use cautiously.
